According to a TMZ report, Bennington committed suicide by hanging. Those reports have been unconfirmed by the coroner. His body was discovered just before 9 this morning in his private LA residence. He was 41 and is survived by 6 children.

Bennington had a long history of fighting drugs and alcohol and struggled with demons from his childhood. He also was close to Chris Cornell, who took his own life in May. Bennington performed Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” at the Soundgarden singer’s memorial in late May, and penned this personal letter to his friend at the time of his passing. Today would have been Cornell’s 53rd birthday.

From their recent single “Heavy” featuring Kiiara, to their mega hits of “In the End” and “Crawling“, as well as their epic collaboration/mash-up with Jay-Z in 2004.
